ARTIST STATEMENT: For my Portrait Project, I chose to shoot and interview my mother, because she's one of my biggest role models and I thought it would be interesting to shoot with her, since I realize that I rarely take pictures of her. During the interviewing process of the project, not only was I able to grasp an idea of how I wanted to shoot pictures of her, but I also learned more about her as a result. With the pictures displayed on the left, I shot pictures of her outside. I wanted to capture in a simple environment and to have her wearing her natural appearance, which is what I managed to capture. Her appearance in all of these pictures are her neutral and natural expressions and is a fairly stoic person. With the pictures displayed to the right, I shot pictures of my mother indoors. I hoped to emphasize that my mother was loved by everyone in my family by purposely including objects in the back that said "Happy Mother's Day;" Mother's Day is a holiday that we dedicate just for her, so I believed it was important to include. The Chinese characters in the back of one of the pictures shot indoors is a saying in Chinese that represents luck, which is something my subject constantly says.
